Skidel: the legacy of the Chetvertinskys and spiritual shrines.

Description

The name of the city comes from the local river Skidelka. In the 16th century, the town belonged to the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and was part of the Grodno region of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Since 1588, Skidel has been the royal court of the Trotsky voivodeship of the Grodno Starostvo.

In 1644, the town received Vases for fairs from the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Vladislav IV.

After the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Skidel became part of the Russian Empire. Empress Catherine II presented the place to the widow of Prince Anthony Svyatopolk-Chetvertinsky. In the 19th century, the Chetvertinskys built a manor house with a palace, a park and a chapel. The palace has not been preserved to our time.

Since 1885, Skidel has been the center of the municipality in the Grodno district.

After the Peace of Riga in 1921, the city became part of the Polish state until 1939, before the arrival of Soviet power.

Take a guided tour of Skidel and its surroundings.

You will visit the Chetvertinsky Estate, the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The estate has preserved a park, the ancestral chapel-tomb of the Chetvertinskys, the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which served as the ancestral church, and a church made in the retrospective Russian style.
