Polotsk is religious.
Description
The city of Polotsk is not only a significant cultural, but also a spiritual center in the Belarusian lands.
Over the course of several centuries, Polotsk has undergone significant changes in the religious sphere. Following the Jesuits, other Catholic monastic orders settled in the city: Franciscans, Dominicans and Bernardines. Later, the influence of the Uniate Church, which arose as a result of the ecclesiastical union between Catholics and Orthodox Christians, strengthened in the Polotsk lands. The main temple of the Uniates in Polotsk was St. Sophia Cathedral. Later, the role of the main center of Orthodoxy in the city was permanently transferred to the fraternal Epiphany Monastery. Even before the Livonian War, Protestants appeared in Polotsk, and a Calvinist assembly functioned in the city center. Along with Christian denominations, Jews and Muslims lived in Polotsk, and the Jewish community made up the majority of the entire urban population.
In this tour of Polotsk, we will visit the main religious sights of the city that have been preserved in it: St. Sophia Cathedral, the former Jesuit Collegium, the Cathedral of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Assumption of the Old Believers Church, the Savior-Euphrosyne Monastery, the Church of St. Andrew Boboli.
