Through the memorable places of the Soltan family.
Description
The Soltan family is a noble family that played a significant role in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and subsequently in the lands of Belarus.
Its representatives have held high government and ecclesiastical positions for several centuries, and their legacy is still preserved by numerous architectural monuments.
The family that used the coat of arms of "Vrenby" (modified "Abdank") was of Russian-Lithuanian origin and had been known since the 15th century. Even then, the brothers Andrei and Soltan Alexandrovich held important posts at the court: Andrei was a sub-secretary (treasurer), and Soltan was a royal marshal and governor.
Their descendants continued this tradition: Andrey's son, Ivan, became sub-bishop of the court, and Soltan's son, Joseph, became Metropolitan of Kiev.
Another member of the family, Alexander Soltan, and then his son Ivan, also served as marshals.
The peak of the Soltan's influence occurred in different historical periods. In the XV-XVI centuries, the Soltans actively participated in political life, and in the XVIII century Stanislav Soltan consistently held the posts of cornet, commander and marshal of the Court of Lithuania.
Their activities are closely intertwined with the cultural and spiritual development of the region.
It was Metropolitan Joseph Soltan who was one of the initiators of the construction of the Cathedral of Saints Boris and Gleb in Novogrudok.
The family owned vast lands where they built manors, temples and contributed to the development of small towns, many of which, like Soltanovschina, were named after them.
After the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the uprisings, some branches of the family were subjected to confiscation of estates, but the family was included in the genealogical books of several Belarusian provinces.
Today, the memory of the Soltans lives on in the walls of restored churches, picturesque ruins of manors and in legends that continue to attract the attention.
